TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SWORD ARTS arrow-left

Homonji Iaido is a practice based on techniques from Koryu (old style) Japanese Sword arts. Our focus is on gaining balance, mindfulness, discipline and harmony in our lives.

ONE CUT, ONE MIND: IAIDO TRAINING GROUNDED IN ZEN AND TRADITIONAL BUDO

OUR TRAINING FOCUS

GAINING BALANCE, MINDFULNESS, DISCIPLINE AND HARMONY IN OUR LIVES.

KATA

Homonji Iaido's Kata set contains 10 forms based on Koryu techniques. Our kata helps our students to learn multiple techniques in succession, while understanding timing, strategy and performance.

New students learn our Kihon set and have opportunity to build on their technique over time. As ability increases, we build on foundations to develop further control.

KUMITACHI

Kumitachi are set forms with one or more partners. Through our kumitachi sets, students learn timing, distance and technique with a live partner.

Since Kumitachi is about both sides of technique, students learn both Shutachi and Uchitachi positions. Kumitachi tend to be faster, longer and more complex than individual kata practice.

SHŪCHŪ RENSHŪ

We use "focus exercises" to teach students how to strike a target, manage timing, distance and proper stance. These techniques are also performed quickly and help to build stamina and strength.

We perform Shūchu Renshū in a safe environment, using Shinai (bamboo katana) so students can still develop strong striking skills while staying safe.

UGOKU MEISŌ

Homonji Iaido was formed at Dharma Gate Zen Temple, and our focus in Zen carries into our Iaido practice with our Mindful Practices. Slow solo forms, no enemies, just constant, slow, mindful technique.

Since most of our training is to manage our mental focus and control our actions, mindful practices help support students with "moving meditation" through our techniques.

RANDORI

Randori is "free training" or light sparring. Homonji Iaido tends to be unique adding these practices to our training, but we feel it is important for our students to test their reactions and techniques without having pre-defined motions.

Our Randori practice is only for students who have had a few years of training until they are able to control striking and mindset. We practice randori with Shinai and wear protective gear. This practice is not about competition, it is a way for two students to learn from each other as partners.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

OUR INSTRUCTORS ARE DEDICATED TO TRAIN AND SUPPORT EACH STUDENT'S INDIVIDUAL GROWTH

Our classes are done as a group, yet each student is able to progress at their own pace. From absolute beginners to experienced martial artists, Homonji is open to all.
